Science on the Rise

At the beginning of May, a series of exciting events took place on the school grounds of the GISW. In connection with the Airspace Program, students of the 12th grade physics course and members of the extracurricular course “Science for Experts” organized several activities for younger students.

Observed by many students during a lunch break, a helium-filled balloon was sent 30 meters into the air. It was loaded with sensors to measure temperature, humidity and pressure.

But that was not all: The older students presented their balloon project and had organized several hands-on activities to get the younger ones interested. Students from 4th to 6th grade learned about the process and technical aspects of the balloon project, created their own payloads and attached them to colorful balloons. Near the end their new knowledge was tested through solving mini-quizzes.

A successful lesson, where students learned from other students.

This project is part of a larger cooperation the GISW has with Nearspace, initiated by Prof. Lampkin from the University of Maryland.
